Hi, I’m Selina, Wellbeing Coach, KonMari™ Consultant in training and founder of Restful Space.

My own interest in a simple living space goes back years. Even as a child, I was always moving furniture around and making storage boxes in an effort to get organised. I always longed for simplicity, but was frustrated by all my stuff. However well I organised it, there it still was!

Getting to the point of having a calm home myself hasn’t been easy; as a keen crafts person I always had a cupboard full of beautiful materials, as a Mum, children-related stuff has been a challenge, especially as I loved to say yes to other people’s cast-offs! Also, I’m a bit of an environmentalist so I really don’t like adding to landfill.

So creating and maintaining a calm space challenges the best of us before we find the right balance, but it’s so worth it.

After a corporate career in shopping centre management, I trained in Feng Shui, Wellbeing Coaching and the KonMari™ Method.

I love working with clients in their homes and observing first-hand the way our homes truly reflect our lives. I consider it an honour to witness clients’ transformations as they start letting go of the things they no longer need.

    A Cluttered Fairy Tale
Once upon a time, Maria, the eldest daughter of Slovenian peasant farmers, left home aged 15 in search of work. She was “talent spotted”, singing in an Austrian munitions factory (war was waging), offered a scholarship at the prestigious Mozarteum in Salzburg and thus began an international career in opera. Despite her success, however, she continued to live as her family had; never throwing anything away. Her beautiful home gradually filled up with not only glamorous stage dresses but whatever friends and neighbours were discarding. Maria was my grandmother, and what I remember was enough furniture and white goods to furnish several houses, eventually leaving mere passages to move around. It felt tragic.

Happily, my mother was less extreme. My favourite treat as a child was when my Mum would walk round the house with me, occasionally letting me rearrange furniture and get rid of surplus stuff. I’m profoundly affected by my environment. I need space, quiet and beauty in my surroundings to feel good.
But even I learned to welcome other peoples’ cast offs, source my clothes from charity shops and spend weekends browsing car boot sales. I’m an avid learner and can always justify a new book but combine this with a deep sense of responsibility for looking after the earth (I hate to throw stuff out if it could be fixed or upcycled) and things accumulate.

In my single, corporate, workaholic days my buying habits were tempered but as our family grew, I resented being at the mercy of so much stuff. I’d feel its heaviness when I came home.
One day a friend came over to help me declutter and I let go of way more than I could have done alone. I felt so light and free. And so, alongside my lifelong fascination for feng shui, supporting others to declutter and rediscover the peace in their own space became my passion.
